Victorville, California (Our Hesperia) – San Bernardino County Regional Parks hosts its annual one-day trout derby at Mojave Narrows Regional Park in Victorville on Saturday, March 7, from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., with gates opening at 6:30 a.m. Anglers aged 16 and older need a valid California fishing license, while entry costs $20 per person plus $15 per vehicle—prepayment encouraged online.

This family-friendly event promises excitement with 1,660 pounds of trout, including prized lightning trout, stocked across Pelican and Horseshoe Lakes on Friday, March 6, closing lakes to public fishing until after the 1 p.m. weigh-in. Cash prizes include $1,000 for first place, $500 for second, and $250 for third, announced at 1:15 p.m.—winners need not be present. A food truck will serve onsite, and the rain-or-shine derby features a weigh station with a strict 1 p.m. cutoff.

Storied Tradition of Local Fishing Competitions

San Bernardino County Regional Parks has built a strong legacy of trout derbies, evolving from month-long skilled events at parks like Mojave Narrows, Cucamonga-Guasti, and Glen Helen starting as early as March 2024, where weekly stockings drew crowds. These one-day high-stakes tournaments, now annual fixtures, ramped up in 2025 with derbies at Mojave Narrows on March 8—stocking 1,315 pounds—and similar events at Prado Regional Park in January 2026, stocking identical 1,660 pounds for $1,000 top prizes.

The March slot at Mojave Narrows underscores the High Desert’s role in this tradition, attracting Victorville and Hesperia locals to test skills amid the scenic lakes at 18000 Yates Road. Past events highlight community enthusiasm, with traffic management like lane closures already planned for smooth access from westbound directions only at Yates and Park roads.

Prepay fees at the reservation site and secure your fishing license. Our Hesperia readers, this is prime time to hook a big win and celebrate county-led outdoor heritage.
