LOS ANGELES, Sept. 29 (Our Los Angeles) — A planned White House meeting in Washington will bring President Donald Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson and technology executives together to discuss a central question for U.S. AI policy: how to oversee the technology without slowing its development.
Johnson, a Republican, said in a Monday interview with Fox Business that the discussion would seek a balance between innovation and oversight. “We do not need a moratorium. We do not need to jump in and hyper-regulate this, because we’ll lose the race to China,” he said. He also said safety, transparency and oversight matter.
The meeting was planned for Sept. 29, according to a person familiar with the plans who spoke to Reuters. People familiar with the plans identified Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, OpenAI’s Greg Brockman and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang among the expected participants. Their attendance had not been confirmed as completed.
Johnson’s remarks indicate the discussion is about the terms of government oversight, not a decision to halt AI development. That distinction matters for companies building AI systems and for federal officials weighing how to address problems that may arise. Johnson suggested the Justice Department could have a role if things go wrong, but said transparency and oversight should come first.
Johnson did not outline a specific policy proposal or say what action, if any, might follow the meeting.
