HESPERIA, Calif., July 28 (Our Hesperia) — The San Bernardino County Library is turning the Hesperia Branch Library parking lot into a Route 66 celebration with its first Read, Write & Cruise Car Show.

The free public event is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 9650 7th Ave. in Hesperia. The library said the show will feature classic vehicles, live entertainment, food vendors, community vendors, interactive activities and prizes. It also said the event can accommodate up to 100 cars.

What families and car fans should know

The county library said vehicle registration for exhibitors was open through June 12, 2026, or until all spaces were filled. The announcement does not say whether the show reached capacity.

The library’s Events Coordinator, Jenni McCormick, said the event is meant to mark the 100th anniversary of Route 66 and bring people together.

“As we commemorate the 100th anniversary of Route 66, we’re excited to bring our first-ever car show to the community and create an event where people can connect, share stories and celebrate the road that has inspired generations,” McCormick said.

Why a library is hosting a car show

Public libraries often serve as more than places to check out books. In this case, the San Bernardino County Library is using the Hesperia branch to host a community event tied to Route 66, one of the best-known highways in American history.

The county announcement does not explain the full meaning of the event’s name, “Read, Write & Cruise,” and it does not spell out any separate reading or writing program. What it does show is a family-friendly event built around cars, community activities and the Route 66 milestone.

The bigger picture

Route 66 is nearing its 100-year mark, and communities along the historic highway are planning events to recognize its place in U.S. culture and travel history. The Hesperia library’s car show is one local example of how public agencies are marking that anniversary with free public programming.

For Hesperia families, the event means an afternoon of classic cars and hands-on activities at a county library site rather than a traditional museum or fairground setting.
