MADISON, Wis., Aug. 14 (Nationwide Times) — Augmental Technologies’ MouthPad is a custom-fitted mouthpiece that lets users control digital devices with tongue and head movements instead of a hand-held mouse or touchscreen.
The device is now available for public sale in the United States, according to an announcement from Augmental distributed through PR Newswire. It costs $1,400 for one device or $1,900 for two devices made for the same person.
How MouthPad works
MouthPad contains a pressure-sensitive touchpad that rests against the roof of the mouth. A user can move a cursor with the tongue, while motion sensors track head movements.
Augmental says the device can support common computer actions, including clicking, scrolling, dragging and swiping. Pressing the tongue can produce a left click or activate click-and-drag. A sip gesture can be used for a right click.
The mouthpiece connects over Bluetooth. Augmental lists compatibility with phones, tablets and computers running iOS, Android, macOS, Windows and Linux.
Why the device is designed this way
Augmental says MouthPad is intended to offer another way to use everyday technology for people with limited mobility. The design may also be relevant for users who cannot easily operate a conventional mouse, keyboard or touchscreen.
MIT News described the device in 2024 as a system using a palate touchpad, motion sensors and Bluetooth to create hands-free computer controls. The report did not describe independent testing of the product’s performance or accessibility benefits.
Augmental’s product information says MouthPad is intended for people over 18 who have sufficient tongue dexterity. The company does not describe the device as a universal replacement for other forms of computer input.
Custom fitting and delivery
Each MouthPad is made for one person. Augmental says the fitting process uses an intraoral or dental 3D scan, which is then used to manufacture the mouthpiece.
The scan is separate from the purchase price. Augmental says it generally costs between $50 and $150, depending on the provider. The company estimates delivery at about six months after it receives the scan.
Augmental currently sells and ships MouthPad only to U.S. addresses. The company says the device is not geographically restricted once purchased, so it can be used outside the United States.
What remains unclear
The available product information does not establish how accurately MouthPad performs across different users, how comfortable it is during extended use or how it affects speech. It also does not provide an independent assessment of its accessibility outcomes, privacy protections or Bluetooth security.
Some technical details reported elsewhere, including battery life and weight, vary by source or model and are not included here. The supplied information also does not establish whether the device has received regulatory clearance or what health and safety testing it has undergone.
Augmental said MouthPad entered an Early Access program in 2024 before public U.S. sales opened July 22, 2026.
