A Legacy of Public Service in Hesperia

Hesperia, California (Our Hesperia) – Since stepping into the elected public sphere in 2006, Rebekah Swanson has cultivated a legacy of dedication and service in Hesperia. Her journey began with her election to the Hesperia Recreation and Park District, a role she held for ten years before moving to the City of Hesperia City Council. Over the years, Swanson has become a recognized figure in the local government, known for her commitment to enhancing the community, attracting economic opportunities, and fostering a quality of life that residents can take pride in.

In an exclusive interview, Swanson shared insights into her political journey and the values that have guided her approach to leadership. “My primary focus has always been on creating a better quality of life for Hesperia’s residents,” she explained. “From recreation and parks to infrastructure and public safety, every decision I make is based on what will benefit the people who live here.”

Swanson’s tenure on the Recreation and Park District board from 2006 to 2016 was marked by her commitment to expanding recreational opportunities and advocating for community spaces, where families could gather and children could play. She was instrumental in the development and improvement of several local parks, ensuring they met the needs of a growing population. “The parks are essential to community life. They offer residents a space to connect, stay active, and enjoy our beautiful city,” she said.

In 2016, Swanson took her commitment to a new level by being elected to join the Hesperia City Council, where she has worked tirelessly to address the city’s needs. Her tenure on the council has focused on bringing jobs to Hesperia, improving transportation funding, and implementing road improvements. A retired educator, Swanson’s experience as a teacher and her role as a founding member of the Hesperia Friends of the Library have given her a unique perspective on community service, which she brings to her work on the council.

When asked to share some of the key projects she has contributed to, Swanson’s enthusiasm was clear. “I’m incredibly proud of our work on the I-15 freeway expansion from the Cajon Pass to Bear Valley Road, a vital project that has reduced congestion and improved access for thousands of residents and travelers,” she shared. This large-scale infrastructure improvement has been a significant achievement, addressing a long-standing traffic bottleneck in the region. “Just the new look and feel of a new freeway will help bring new businesses to Hesperia along the I-15 corridor. New businesses mean more tax dollars for police, fire, roads across our community” Swanson commented.

Swanson also highlighted the progress on Ranchero Road, an important east-west corridor that has enhanced connectivity and reduced traffic on other major thoroughfares. “Ranchero Road has been transformative for Hesperia. It’s opened up new possibilities for businesses and residents alike,” she explained.

Another ambitious project is the planned Brightline high-speed rail, a project she believes will bring economic opportunities and enhanced transportation options to Hesperia. “The Brightline rail project is a game-changer. The trains will be all-electric, 0 emissions with a top speed of 200 mph. It will link us directly to major economic hubs, potentially bringing new jobs and visitors to our city,” she noted.

Swanson also played a role in the expansion of Hesperia’s freeway business corridor, attracting major retailers like Sam’s Club, which will bring jobs and revenue to the local economy. “Expanding the business corridor along the freeway was crucial in bringing in businesses that support our economy and give residents more shopping and job opportunities,” she said. Her vision for a thriving commercial area along the freeway aligns with her commitment to economic development and improvements in quality of life for Hesperia’s residents.

She also pointed to the ongoing paving and improvement of Main Street, a major roadway that has benefited from her focus on infrastructure. “Main Street is Hesperia’s backbone. Making sure it’s well-paved and accessible not only eases travel for residents but supports the businesses that line this important corridor,” she emphasized.

Despite these successes, Swanson acknowledged that there is still much work to be done. “Our residential roads across Hesperia are in tough shape,” she admitted. “But it takes money to correct this problem, and that’s where the blooming of the freeway businesses will play a crucial role.” Swanson sees the economic benefits from these business developments along the freeway as a vital resource to fund much-needed improvements to residential roads. “As we continue to bring in revenue from new businesses, we’ll have more opportunities to invest in the infrastructure our residents need and deserve,” she added.

A staunch advocate for fiscal responsibility, Swanson is known for her vigilance against waste, fraud, and abuse in city spending. “We owe it to our residents to use resources wisely and to avoid unnecessary expenditures. Fiscal responsibility isn’t just about cutting costs; it’s about prioritizing investments that will provide long-term benefits to the community,” she emphasized.

When asked if she would miss being part of the City Council, Swanson reflected on her years of service. “Yes, absolutely,” she replied. “Hesperia is just starting to go into a new chapter, and I’ll miss being a part of the results from the base that has been established. There’s a lot of promise in the projects and investments we’ve put in place, and I would have loved to see those results firsthand as a council member.” Her words reflect her deep-rooted passion for Hesperia’s future and her pride in helping lay the groundwork for the city’s continued growth.

Swanson’s passion for Hesperia and its future development was also a driving factor behind her decision to run for office. “I want to be part of the growth of this city as it enters a new era of development,” she said. She believes Hesperia is on the cusp of transformation, with new opportunities to attract businesses, develop infrastructure, and create more job opportunities for residents.

Reflecting on her legacy, Swanson attributes her success to a genuine love for her community and a dedication to listening to the people she serves. “I’ve always believed in treating everyone with respect and listening to their concerns. People want to know their voices are heard and that their government cares about their needs,” she shared.

Swanson’s commitment to Hesperia is evident not only in her policy decisions but in her personal involvement. She and her husband Eric raised their son, William, and daughter, Julia, in Hesperia. She has long been involved as a volunteer and community member, demonstrating her dedication to the city beyond her official roles.

As the City Council continues without her, Swanson remains optimistic about Hesperia’s future. “Our city has so much potential, and I am honored to be a part of its growth. Together, we can build a Hesperia that reflects the values and aspirations of its residents,” she concluded.

Through her years of service, Swanson has shown that public office is not merely a position but a platform for positive change. Her legacy of service, from her beginnings with the Hesperia Recreation and Park District to her influential role on the city council, as well as her 38 years as teacher, stands as a testament to what can be achieved through dedication, hard work, and a genuine love for the community.
