Bulldogs advance in T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights
Oak Hills High School is among the winners of a $5,000 prize provided by T-Mobile in the company’s Friday Night 5G Lights promotion, putting the Bulldogs in the lead as Hesperia Unified School District fights for a chance to become the owner of $1 million for upgrades of its football field.
This school is a winner in T-Mobile’s $5K Fridays sweepstakes. Friday Night 5G Lights is the company’s third annual nation-wide contest focused on small-town high schools.
According to T-Mobile, more than $8.4 million in prizes are available during the 2026 Friday Night 5G Lights program, with hundreds of $5,000 school awards, finalist grants, regional prizes, and $1 million grand prize for improvements to the winning school’s football field or stadium facilities.
The $5,000 prize won by Oak Hills is a part of the additional $5K Fridays sweepstakes which runs in parallel to the main contest focused on improvement of the schools’ football fields.
According to T-Mobile’s rules, up to 1,000 $5,000 sweepstakes prizes will be awarded during the 2026 program, potentially delivering as much as $5 million in total directly to participating schools. Schools may increase their sweepstakes entries by using eligible social media activity while being engaged in the program.
Oak Hills started promoting its participation in the campaign from this year, announcing that its objective was to get some improvements to the school’s stadium, track, and football field. The school invited its students, parents, and supporters to join the nation-wide campaign.
Getting $5,000 does not mean automatic inclusion of Oak Hills among national finalists. These are two different components of the promotion.
The next important step will be selecting the Division Finalists.
Forty schools will move to the next round
The application period for the main competition ends on Friday, September 18.
As for the 2026 format, schools will be divided into four geographical divisions: West, East, Midwest, and South.
Judging panel will select up to 40 Division Finalists, ten from each division.
Each finalist will receive $25,000 grant to the school, along with T-Mobile hosted home football game and celebration package. According to T-Mobile, the total value of each package will be about $43,000.
Oak Hills will be competing in the West division.
Judges will take into account various factors including the need for the field upgrades, potential benefit of the improvement to the school and its community, feasibility and quality of the projects, creativity of the application and community’s involvement into the school campaign.
In other words, this is not only about a football team performance. Community engagement and necessity to improve the school facilities will play critical role in selection of winners.
Public voting is crucial in October
Forty Division Finalists will be announced in early October and public voting will run from October 8 to October 25.
The school having the highest score in each of four geographical divisions will be named a Division Champion.
Each Division Champion will receive $250,000 grant to the school, Gronk Fitness package, T-Mobile celebration event and $5,000 student-focused prize. According to T-Mobile, the total value of each package will be about $345,000.
Another round of public voting will be held between October 29 and November 8 for the four Division Champions.
National grand prize winner will be announced on November 12.
This school will get $1 million for capital improvement of its football field or stadium facilities, along with access to field improvement consultation and T-Mobile celebration related to completion of the project.
According to the current rules, T-Mobile will also offer a $25,000 Team Magenta award which will be selected among Division Champion runners-up by the company employees.
How Oak Hills qualifies for Friday Night 5G Lights
Friday Night 5G Lights is focused mainly on schools in smaller cities and communities.
Generally speaking, eligible schools should provide secondary education, have their own football field, maintain public social media accounts and be located in a city, town, or municipality with the population of not more than 150,000. Moreover, schools should have authority to accept and implement any improvements they will win in the competition.
Oak Hills High School is a school of Hesperia Unified School District and is located at 7625 Cataba Road in Oak Hills area of Hesperia.
The school opened on August 10, 2009, making it a youngest of Hesperia Unified’s traditional comprehensive high schools. According to records of California Department of Education, Oak Hills is a public high school providing education to grades nine through 12.
Opening of the school coincided with population growth in Hesperia and Victor Valley areas.
While Hesperia High School saw significant growth in enrollment because of population growth, Oak Hills High was built as the third comprehensive high school of Hesperia Unified as a means of providing extra capacity for the growing number of students in southern parts of the district and Oak Hills community.
According to district records of that period, Oak Hills was opened in 2009-10 school year for freshmen through juniors, and the school invited its first seniors in 2010-11 school year.
The campus of the school was built as a big comprehensive high school with classrooms, science laboratories, facilities for industrial technology, performing arts and music programs, gymnasium, library and athletic facilities.
More than 17 years later, these athletic facilities become the reason for Oak Hills’ participation in Friday Night 5G Lights competition and another chance of getting major improvements to its campus.
Small communities managed to win before
The history of Friday Night 5G Lights shows that even a small community can compete successfully on a national scale.
In 2024 Inola High School from Oklahoma became a winner of the first competition.
At that time, the population of Inola was 1,900 people, with high school enrollment of more than 400 students. School’s students and supporters ran extensive campaign across the whole state building its popularity.
According to T-Mobile’s 2026 description of the program, Inola became the first owner of the $1 million field-upgrade grand prize. Original description in 2024 by T-Mobile valued the entire set of improvements, equipment, and other gifts received by the school at $2 million.
In 2025 Friday Night 5G Lights competition received participation of more than 2,100 schools.
Dierks High School from Arkansas won the second national competition.
Dierks is a community with population of 900 people, but the school’s supporters managed to gather almost 2 million votes for their campaign. As T-Mobile reported, more than 8 million votes were cast nationwide in 2025 competition for finalists. Dierks High received the grand prize of $1 million field upgrade.
According to T-Mobile, 750 $5,000 school awards were distributed through Friday Night 5G Lights sweepstakes in the first two years of the program.
Community participation may change everything
For Oak Hills High School the immediate result is obvious: the school has won $5,000.
Future will depend on whether Oak Hills will become one of the 10 West Division Finalists.
In case of advancing, the competition will switch from application and judges evaluation phase to a public campaign where students, parents, alumni and other supporters can help the school by voting.
The examples of Inola and Dierks emphasize the main point of Friday Night 5G Lights program: even a small town school can win nationwide support.
For Oak Hills High School advancing to the finalists’ round will ensure winning another major prize, making the school the contender for the program’s biggest award.
The schedule is tight:
applications end on Sept. 18; voting for 40 finalists will start on Oct. 8; voting for Division Champions starts on Oct. 29 and national winner will be announced on Nov. 12.
Oak Hills High School has already won its first $5,000.
The question now is whether this victory will be the first step toward winning $1 million for upgrading of its football field.
