School year gets underway for HUSD
HESPERIA, Calif. (Our Hesperia) — Hesperia Unified School District students reported to class Thursday, Aug. 6, marking the start of the 2026-27 school year at HUSD elementary, middle and high school campuses. Schools were welcoming students to the new school year to get ready for the new academic year, sports, clubs and other activities.
The opening of school marked the start of new routines in Hesperia, with buses picking up students for the new year, parents taking their kids to campus and students learning about new teachers, classrooms and daily schedules.
Younger children attend school to experience the first time being in a classroom setting, while the older students return to prepare to meet graduation requirements, college requirements and career choices.
District schools were getting ready for the new year by updating registrations, holding orientations, distributing schedules and back-to-school activities. Parents may access information about their child’s school year through Infinite Campus of the district. Each school also has posted bell schedules, calendars and transportation schedules for the 2026-27 year.
Classes also mean that there will be an increase in traffic around school campuses due to mornings and afternoons bringing parents and children to school and buses taking them home. Expect increased traffic in neighborhoods with schools, slow down when approaching school zones and watch for children walking on sidewalks and crosswalks.
Parents are advised to establish morning routine, check transportation and update the emergency contacts at school. Attendance during first weeks of the school year is very important because the first weeks are the time when teachers teach rules of conduct and class procedures.
District Serves Multiple Generations of Hesperia Children
The formation of Hesperia Unified School District took place in 1987, when the district created from local high school district and elementary district. The district was formed from Hesperia Elementary School District and Victor Valley Union High School District. Students attending Hesperia schools before unification went to high schools located in the Victor Valley Union High School District.
This happened at the time of rapid population growth in the Victor Valley region. Hesperia city incorporated in 1988, the year following the formation of Hesperia Unified, as it became the center of rapid growth in population in the High Desert area. As of 2025, the population of Hesperia city exceeded 100,000 people.
As the population of Hesperia increased, the school district was expanding beyond its initial campuses. In addition to the existing neighborhood elementary schools and Hesperia High School, two new high schools were opened. Sultana High School was opened to serve the growing eastern part of the city and Oak Hills High School was added later to provide additional option for students in southern Hesperia and Oak Hills.
The district includes elementary schools, middle schools, three comprehensive high schools, alternative education programs, choice campuses, adult education and other services. The districts operate schools in Hesperia, as well as unincorporated communities of the region and other surrounding areas.
The school programs include career technical education programs, Advanced Placement classes, programs in performing arts, athletics, leadership, dual enrollment programs, academic pathways and other programs.
The role of technology has been increasing in instruction in the last decades. The Family Resource Center of the district lists its one-to-one Chromebook program as one of its services helping students and parents. This center also provides early-childhood programs and helps families navigate their way through various education and community programs.
Recently, some of the programs in Hesperia schools received state recognition. The Oak Hills High School received the California Distinguished School designation in 2024, and Hesperia High School received the California Exemplary Arts Education Award in 2026.
Another School Year Begins
The opening of the 2026-27 school year marks the beginning of another cycle of classroom instruction, fall sports, student performances, parents’ conferences and community events.
Elementary children will develop reading, writing and math skills, middle school students will explore elective classes and get ready for high school, and high school students will take required classes and be involved in athletics, arts, career programs and college preparations.
For seniors, the school year started on Thursday. Seniors of the Class of 2027 will spend the coming months fulfilling graduation requirements, applying for scholarships and making plans for their future.
The school year will also mark a new year of partnership between students, parents, teachers, support staff and organizations. This collaboration will determine progress of thousands of local students until the last bell of the year rings.
