Hesperia Unified School District’s AVID Program Paves the Way for College Success

Hesperia, California (Our Hesperia) – The Hesperia Unified School District (HUSD) is making significant strides in preparing students for higher education through its robust AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program. With a mission to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society, AVID has become a cornerstone of HUSD’s efforts to empower students to pursue higher education confidently.

“AVID helps students fulfill their personal pathways to reach their higher education goals.” said Eric Swanson, School Board President of Hesperia Unified School District. “The number of students successfully making college choices each year is amazing.”

What is AVID?

The AVID program, a nationwide college-readiness system, equips students with essential skills such as critical thinking, organization, and time management, while fostering a culture of determination and achievement. In Hesperia, AVID has been implemented across multiple grade levels, focusing on students who show the potential to succeed but may face systemic barriers to accessing higher education.

Personalized Pathways to College

A key feature of HUSD’s AVID program is its individualized approach to college readiness. Students are guided through rigorous coursework, college research, application processes, and scholarship opportunities. AVID provides specialized tutorials and mentoring sessions to help students tackle advanced placement (AP) and concurrent college courses and exams, ensuring they stand out in the competitive college admissions landscape.

Collaboration and Support

AVID’s success in HUSD is bolstered by its collaborative approach. Teachers, counselors, and AVID tutors work closely to monitor student progress, provide feedback, and celebrate milestones. Parent engagement is also a critical component, with workshops designed to educate families about college admission requirements, financial aid, and the importance of supporting their student’s educational goals.

Impact and Results

The AVID program’s influence is evident in the district’s rising college acceptance rates. “HUSD data shows that AVID students are more likely to complete concurrent college courses and enroll in four-year universities,” Swanson commented.

Looking Ahead

As HUSD continues to invest in AVID, the district aims to reach more students and expand its offerings, including career exploration opportunities and partnerships with local colleges. “With its proven track record, AVID remains a vital resource in equipping Hesperia’s students with the tools they need to succeed in college and beyond,” said Swanson.

“Programs like AVID, that are fully support by Hesperia Unified School District school board are a commitment to every student for a bright and prosperous future by Preparing Today’s Students for Tomorrow’s World,” said Swanson.
