HESPERIA, Calif., June 30 (Our Hesperia) — The Hesperia Recreation and Park District has started work on a major update to Palm Street Park in Hesperia.

The project is aimed at turning the park into a more active, family-friendly space with a new splash pad, a dedicated dog park, improved walking trails and new outdoor restrooms. The district held a groundbreaking celebration June 27 at Palm Street Park, 13558 Palm Street.

What is Palm Street Park getting?

District project materials describe several additions for the park. Those include:

  • a splash pad for water play
  • a dog park with separate areas for large and small dogs
  • walking trail improvements
  • new outdoor restrooms for public use

A splash pad is a water play area that uses sprays or jets instead of a swimming pool. A dog park gives pets a fenced place to play off leash. Restrooms and trail upgrades can make a park easier to use for longer visits.

Why is the district making these changes?

The district says the improvements are meant to expand recreation opportunities, support healthy lifestyles and create a more inclusive park experience for residents of all ages.

Palm Street Park already serves as a neighborhood spot. The district says it sits next to the Rick Novack Community Center and already includes a playground, grassy space and a fit trail. The district also says a new playground was installed there in March 2018.

Is this a new idea?

No. The project has been developing for some time.

District board action reported in 2023 showed approval for construction of a new dog park and splash pad at Palm Street Park. District board packet material from January 2024 also shows leaders discussing park additions, including restrooms and other features.

That matters because the June 27 groundbreaking was the latest public step in a longer project timeline, not the start of the idea itself.

Why does the project have an environment angle?

For Hesperia, the park work is also tied to water use.

The district says Palm Street Park is part of a landscape conversion effort and its participation in the Mojave Water Agency’s Cash for Grass program. That points to a local goal of changing park landscaping in a way that fits the region’s water-conservation needs.

The public materials reviewed for this project do not give a total cost, a completion date or a full construction schedule. The district says the improvements are coming soon.

What should residents expect next?

For now, the key takeaway is simple: Palm Street Park is being upgraded with new recreation features and basic site improvements that could make the park more useful for children, dog owners and walkers.

The district has framed the project as a neighborhood investment in both recreation and park access. The groundbreaking marks the point when that plan moved from discussion to construction.
