HESPERIA, Calif., July 14 (Our Hesperia) — Visitors heading to Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area in Hesperia will find swim beaches closed and a danger advisory in place after state officials reported a harmful blue-green algae bloom and higher toxin levels in the water.

California State Parks says the advisory means people should stay out of the water, including wading. Officials also warn against touching algae scum, drinking lake water, letting pets into or near the water, or eating fish or shellfish from the lake.

The recreation area is at 13990 Sawpit Canyon Rd., off Highway 138 and Cleghorn Road. The park page says the California Department of Water Resources tests the water regularly and updates harmful algae advisories weekly at entrances and other water-contact areas.

State Parks said DWR sampling found increased microcystin toxin levels, and the warning remains in effect until further notice.
