Dr. Smith Brings A Wealth Of Experience To Her New Role

Hesperia, California (Our Hesperia) – The Hesperia Unified School District Board of Trustees has announced that Dr. Michelle Smith will become the district’s next superintendent, effective July 1, 2025. Dr. Smith, currently serving as the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, will succeed David Olney, who is set to retire after years of dedicated service to the district.
Dr. Smith brings a wealth of experience to her new role. As the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, she has been instrumental in shaping the district’s educational policies and programs. Her deep understanding of the district’s operations and her commitment to student success make her an ideal candidate to lead Hesperia Unified into its next chapter.
The transition comes at a time of growth and development for the district. Under Olney’s leadership, Hesperia Unified has seen significant improvements, including the recent groundbreaking of the Hesperia High School Community Event Center.
This facility, funded by ESSER grants, aims to address the needs of low-income students, provide mental health services, and implement after-school programs.
Dr. Smith is expected to continue this momentum, focusing on key areas such as:
- Enhancing educational opportunities for all students
- Strengthening community partnerships
- Addressing the unique needs of the district’s diverse student population
- Implementing innovative teaching strategies
The Hesperia Unified School District, which serves over 23,000 students will benefit from Dr. Smith’s leadership as it continues to strive for excellence in education. Her appointment reflects the board’s confidence in her ability to guide the district through the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
As the district prepares for this transition, the Board of Trustees expresses its gratitude to Superintendent Olney for his years of service and looks forward to the fresh perspective and continued progress under Dr. Smith’s leadership.
