OCEANSIDE, Calif., July 1 (Laguna Beach Daily) — A Southern California couple says a moving broker doubled their quoted price from more than $16,000 to $32,000 after loading their belongings for an interstate move, then kept the items after a disputed delivery attempt in North Carolina.

John Nelson said he and his spouse hired the broker for a move from Oceanside, California, to North Carolina and paid a $7,000 deposit. He said movers arrived at the home at the end of May and later claimed there were far more items than first assessed.

Nelson said the new price was set at $32,000. He said the company also tried to deliver the shipment on June 3, even though the couple had said they would not arrive at the destination until June 10.

After no one was there to receive the delivery, Nelson said the company added a redelivery fee. He said he suspects the June 3 attempt may have been staged after watching video of the truck arriving.

Nelson said the couple filed police reports in Oceanside and in their North Carolina destination city and submitted complaints to the Better Business Bureau and other agencies. The moving broker was not identified in the account, and no response from the company was included in the material reviewed.
